The rise of AI-powered vibe coding, in which non-technical users generate functioning software using AI models without understanding how the underlying code works, is flooding Apple’s App Store and other platforms with a wave of low-quality applications that is straining review processes, threatening user security, and undermining the discoverability of legitimate software. Data from analytics firm Sensor Tower shows approximately 600,000 new apps appeared on Apple’s App Store across all of 2025, itself a 30 percent year-on-year increase. In just the first half of 2026, that figure had already reached 560,000, pointing to at least a doubling for the full year. Despite this explosion in supply, consumer demand has not followed: app downloads grew only three percent in 2025 and two percent in the first half of 2026, suggesting the new apps are not meeting genuine user needs.
The security implications of this trend are significant. AI-generated code is widely noted for appearing functional on the surface while concealing serious flaws in real-world conditions, and developers who do not understand the code they are shipping are poorly placed to identify privacy gaps, data leakage vulnerabilities, or exploits that could allow malicious actors access to users’ devices. The situation also shifts the role of platform holders from curators of quality software to security checkpoints overwhelmed by volume, with developers on mobile programming forums already reporting lengthening App Store review times that delay legitimate updates and increase the risk of problematic apps slipping through. Vibe-coded apps also carry a longer-term risk of abandonment, as creators who do not understand their own code are poorly equipped to maintain it through operating system updates, potentially leaving users with deprecated or dangerously unstable software.
Beyond security, the flood of AI-generated apps is degrading the utility of app stores as discovery platforms. Searches for any given app category now return hundreds of near-identical results, and online forums have seen a notable increase in users questioning whether promoted apps are vibe-coded or complaining they do not work as described. Commercial viability is also limited, as the additional complexity of integrating paid subscriptions or in-app purchases means most vibe-coded apps monetise through advertising or off-platform payment links, generating nothing for Apple while delivering a poorer user experience. Apple has already moved against some iPhone-based vibe coding platforms that attempt to push code updates outside the standard review process, but the broader structural tension between open app submission and quality control shows no signs of resolving.
