A WA man who was responsible for carrying out “evil twin” WiFi attacks on airline passengers has been sentenced to seven years in prison. The individual, identified as Lemuel Lasher, had been targeting unsuspecting travelers with malicious WiFi networks that mimicked legitimate in-flight internet services, allowing him to intercept sensitive data and carry out a range of nefarious activities.
Lasher’s scheme involved setting up rogue wireless access points on various flights, often with names that closely resembled the official on-board WiFi networks. Unknowing passengers would then connect to these “evil twin” networks, unknowingly funneling their internet traffic through Lasher’s own servers. This allowed him to steal login credentials, financial information, and other sensitive data from his victims, as well as potentially hijack their devices for further attacks.
The lengthy sentence handed down by the court sends a strong message that such malicious hacking activities will not be tolerated.
