Johannes Ullrich released a public service announcement today on why you must run an adblocker when using the internet. He claims that ad networks are not doing enough due diligence on the ads that they run on their networks. He provided examples of Google search results where the displayed ads are often used to distribute malicious software impersonating popular programs. Examples of such malicious ads can be found when searching for the keywords Virtualbox or VLC. Johannes recommends not blindly trusting the software you download and provides a few tips on how to stay safe, that includes running any downloads through virustotal.
