Marcus Hutchins, whose well known for creating Malware and also for stopping Wannacry, wrote an article about his investigation into TikTok’s privacy concerns. He found that with regards to privacy, TikTok does not operate outside of the norms of standard social media apps, nor do they gather any data others don’t. It does not collect location data and has the same clipboard monitoring spying capabilities as Reddit and LinkedIn. His conclusion is that the the only real argument here is not what data is gathered, but who is gathering it. So he believes the reason for lawmakers introducing a bill to ban TikTok is due to a National security risk rather than a privacy one.
