The ABC recently released a report on cyber data breaches on Australian companies. They found highly sensitive information of millions of Australians. This included logins for personal Australian Tax Office accounts, medical and personal data of thousands of NDIS recipients, and confidential details of an alleged assault of a Victorian school student by their teacher. All that stolen information is being openly traded online on a forum that first appeared 8 months ago and is easily discoverable through Google. The report estimates that at least 12 million Australians have had their data exposed in recent months and that a number of those victims are unaware of the theft prior to the ABC contacting them. This indicates that the recent Medibank and Optus data breach are only the tip of the ice berg. To learn more, go to the ABC investigations article written by Sean, Echo, Sarah and Kevin.
