The Tasmanian government has confirmed that its VETtrak vocational student management system, used by several state agencies, has been the target of a cyber attack. The VETtrak platform, developed by third-party supplier ReadyTech, is utilized by the state’s Department for Education, Children and Young People, the fire and services department, and the health department.

According to the information provided, ReadyTech first notified the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) of the incident on October 17. While the Tasmanian government stated that there is currently no evidence of sensitive student information being accessed, ReadyTech has since revealed that a “small number” of documents containing personal data originating from the platform have been published.

In response to this development, ReadyTech has reported the incident to the Australian Federal Police and updated the Australian National Office of Cyber Security, as well as other relevant government agencies. The Tasmanian Department of Premier and Cabinet has also warned that malicious actors might attempt to use the stolen data to pursue other kinds of fraud, urging everyone to be cautious and report any suspicious activity.
